  10.           Two Viking spacecraft wil1 be launched to Mars from
  11. Cape

  13. Canaveral this month in the United States' first attempt to
  14. land on

  16. another planet.  The Viking Project is managed by the NASA
  17. Langley

  19. Research Center, Hampton, Virginia.

  21.           Viking launch activities can be monitored at the
  22. Jet Propulsion 
  23.   
  24. Laboratory, Pasadena, per the following schedule:

  26.           The West Coast Viking News Center will open at lO
  27. a.m. Saturday, 
  28.   
  29. August 9, in JPL's von Karman Auditorium, 48OO Oak Grove
  30. Drive, Pasadena. 
  31.   
  32. An audio line from Cape Canaveral will carry the pre-launch
  33. Viking science 
  34.   
  35. briefing, beginning at lO:3O a.m. 
  36.   
  37.           The JPL news center wil1 re-open at 1 p.m. Monday,
  38. August 11. 
  39.   
  40. Launch of the first of two Viking spacecraft to Mars is
  41. scheduled for 
  42.   
  43. 1:59 p.m.  Countdown commentary from the launch site will
  44. begin at 
  45.   
  46. l:20 p.m.  One hour of color video of the launch operations
  47. also will 
  48.   
  49. begin at 1:2O p.m.  Post-launch briefihg from the Cape will
  50. begin at

  52. 3:3O p.m. (audio only).  Mission operations following launch

  54. originate in the Viking control center at JPL and commentary
